Mother’s Day is not just a celebration of biological motherhood—it is a celebration of love, sacrifice, wisdom, and the selfless spirit that shapes generations. For me, the essence of a Blessed Mother is beautifully reflected in the life and legacy of my beloved grandmothers.
My maternal grandmother, Florence C. Ross—lovingly called Mama—was the heart of our family. Her kitchen was a sanctuary where the smell of fried chicken, collard greens, and fresh rolls meant that love was being served. Her home was a refuge for many—a place where no one was judged, and everyone found peace. Married to my grandfather, Henry Ross, for over 50 years, Mama raised 10 children and helped nurture many of her grandchildren, including me. Her love was fierce, forgiving, and unconditionally given.
On my paternal side, my grandmother Helena Hall Boykin was a woman of incredible devotion and strength. Married to Rev. Robert D. Boykin for 72 years, she was a pillar in both our family and the church. As the Sunday School Superintendent well into her 90s, she taught the Word with clarity and joy. Her love language was service—especially through cooking and caregiving. She didn’t believe in putting family members into nursing homes; instead, she became their devoted caregiver, embodying divine compassion.
I also honor my mother, who for 54 years has faithfully walked beside my father, Rev. Ronald Boykin, in ministry. As a First Lady, she poured into countless souls while simultaneously guiding and shaping her own family. Her strength, dignity, and quiet sacrifice are priceless gifts to our family and church community.
As a mother myself to Maya Alexis and Mycah Alexandrea—and now a mother-in-love to Nickayl Elijah Williams—I have learned that motherhood is a journey of giving your best, even when it's not easy. I have prayed, cried, advocated for, and celebrated beside my children. They are better because I gave all that I had, even when I felt I had nothing left. And for that, I thank God.
Not everyone has experienced a loving mother, but that doesn’t mean you have to go without love. God, who is beyond gender and full of grace, has a way of sending the right people—spiritual mothers, mentors, friends—to fill in the gaps. If you had love, give it. If you lacked love, become it. Open your heart and your kindness.
Today, cherish the mothers, grandmothers, aunties, godmothers, and nurturers in your life. Take care of your loved ones while they are here. Speak the words. Share the hugs. And when they transition into the arms of eternity, remember them with gratitude and joy. Our lives are blessed because of the love, care, faithfulness, and lessons in life.
Prayer: Holy One, We lift up every heart that is heavy today. For those missing mothers and grandmothers, bring Your comfort. For the empty chairs at the table, fill the space with sacred memories and warmth. Thank You for those who gave their all in love, and for those who tried in their own way. Heal the wounds of those who did not receive what they needed, and help them become the love they longed for. Surround every grieving soul with Your peace. Remind us that love never dies—it lives on through our actions, words, and care for one another. In Your boundless love, we find strength. Amen.
`May we all strive to be Blessed Mothers—givers of light, love, and legacy.
