DAY 16
Josh Gibson
Excellence Without Acclaim
SCRIPTURE
Colossians 3:23-24 — "Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters, since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward."
"A homer a day will boost my pay." — Josh Gibson
DEVOTIONAL
Josh Gibson (1911–1947) was called "the Black Babe Ruth"—though many who saw both play said Ruth should have been called "the White Josh Gibson." In the Negro Leagues, Gibson was a legendary catcher who hit nearly 800 home runs (some estimates are even higher). He batted over .350 for his career and was a nine-time All-Star.
But Gibson never had the chance to play in Major League Baseball. The color line that segregated America's pastime kept him in the Negro Leagues, where talent equal to or greater than any White player remained invisible to much of the country. Jackie Robinson would not break that barrier until 1947—the same year Gibson died of a stroke at just thirty-five years old.
Gibson played with excellence despite knowing the recognition he deserved would likely never come. He gave everything to a sport that gave him unequal treatment. He performed for the love of the game and for his community, not for the fame and fortune that should have been his.
The tragedy of Gibson's story is the tragedy of all lost potential—brilliance denied its full flowering by unjust systems. How many Gibsons have there been in every field? How many geniuses whose discoveries were never made, whose performances were never seen, whose contributions were stolen by discrimination?
Yet Gibson's example also inspires. He showed that you can pursue excellence for its own sake, working "as for the Lord" even when human masters refuse to recognize your worth. Latino baseball pioneers who followed, Asian American athletes who defied stereotypes, every athlete who has loved their sport enough to give their all despite the odds—they share Gibson's spirit.
God sees what the world overlooks. And in God's kingdom, excellence is never wasted.
REFLECTION QUESTION
How do you maintain excellence when recognition is denied? What drives you to give your best even when the rewards are unfair?
CLOSING PRAYER
God who sees in secret, we thank You for Josh Gibson, who pursued excellence despite unjust denial of the recognition he deserved. When we labor in obscurity, remind us that You see every effort. When we are tempted to give less because the world gives us less, strengthen us to give our all anyway. May we work as for You, trusting that in Your kingdom, no faithful effort is ever wasted. Amen.
