Justice in the Courtroom

SCRIPTURE

Isaiah 1:17 — "Learn to do right; seek justice. Defend the oppressed. Take up the cause of the fatherless; plead the case of the widow."

"Everyone expected me to be a lawyer because my father was a lawyer, but I don't think anyone ever thought I'd actually be a judge." — Jane Bolin

DEVOTIONAL

Jane Matilda Bolin (1908–2007) shattered expectations throughout her life. In 1931, she became the first Black woman to graduate from Yale Law School. In 1939, she became the first Black female judge in the United States when Mayor Fiorello La Guardia appointed her to the Family Court of New York City.

For forty years, Judge Bolin presided over cases involving neglected and abused children, juvenile delinquents, and families in crisis. She approached each case with rigor and compassion, understanding that behind every case number was a human being deserving of dignity.

Bolin used her position to challenge discrimination in ways large and small. She worked to eliminate segregation in child placement agencies, insisting that children should not be assigned to institutions based on their race. She demanded that private agencies that received public funds serve all children equally. These reforms affected thousands of lives.

Throughout her career, Bolin maintained the highest standards of legal excellence while never forgetting that the law existed to serve people, especially the most vulnerable. She understood that justice is not an abstract concept—it is lived out in specific decisions that affect specific lives.

Her example speaks to anyone pursuing careers in law, social work, education, or any field where decisions affect vulnerable populations. Whether you are a Latina attorney advocating for immigrant families, an Asian American social worker serving foster children, or a White public defender representing those who cannot afford representation, Jane Bolin's legacy illuminates the path.

Excellence in service means bringing both competence and compassion to every case, every client, every decision.

REFLECTION QUESTION

How does your work or calling affect vulnerable people? What would it look like to bring both excellence and compassion to every decision you make?

CLOSING PRAYER

Righteous Judge of all, we thank You for Jane Bolin, who showed that justice must be lived out in specific acts of care for specific people. Give those in positions of authority wisdom to make just decisions. Give those who advocate for the vulnerable courage to persist. Help us all remember that behind every policy and every case is a human being made in Your image. May we defend the oppressed with excellence and love. Amen.
