DAY 17
Ida B. Wells-Barnett
The Pen That Fought Terror
SCRIPTURE
Proverbs 31:8 — "Speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves, for the rights of all who are destitute."
"The way to right wrongs is to turn the light of truth upon them." — Ida B. Wells-Barnett
DEVOTIONAL
Ida Bell Wells-Barnett (1862–1931) was born into slavery in Mississippi just months before the Emancipation Proclamation. She would become one of America's most fearless investigative journalists, using her pen to expose the terrorism of lynching when few others dared speak.
After three of her friends were lynched in Memphis in 1892, Wells began documenting the epidemic of racial violence sweeping the South. Her research revealed that lynching was not, as defenders claimed, punishment for crime—it was a tool of racial and economic terror. She published her findings in newspapers she edited and in pamphlets that circulated globally.
For her courage, Wells was driven from Memphis under death threats. A mob destroyed her newspaper office. But she continued her work from the North and from England, building international pressure against American atrocities.
Wells was also a suffragist, co-founding organizations that fought for women's voting rights and civil rights simultaneously. She understood that justice is indivisible—you cannot fight for freedom selectively.
Her example speaks across generations to anyone using journalism, research, or documentation to expose injustice. Latino journalists investigating immigration abuses, Asian American reporters documenting hate crimes, White allies using their platforms to amplify marginalized voices—all carry forward Wells's legacy of bearing witness.
Truth-telling is dangerous work. Wells knew that turning the light of truth upon wrongs would make powerful enemies. She did it anyway, believing that sunlight remains the best disinfectant for the infections of injustice.
Excellence in Wells's mold means rigorous research, courageous publication, and willingness to face consequences for speaking truth.
REFLECTION QUESTION
What injustice in your community needs the light of truth shone upon it? What would it cost you to speak, and what might it cost others if you remain silent?
CLOSING PRAYER
God of truth and light, we thank You for Ida B. Wells-Barnett, who exposed terror with her pen when others were silent. Give us her courage to speak uncomfortable truths. Give us her rigor to research thoroughly before we speak. And give us her conviction that truth-telling is a holy calling worth any risk. May we shine Your light into dark places of injustice. Amen.
