DAY 14
Constance Baker Motley
The Legal Architect of Equality
SCRIPTURE
Proverbs 31:9 — "Speak up and judge fairly; defend the rights of the poor and needy."
"Something which we think is impossible now is not impossible in another decade." — Constance Baker Motley
DEVOTIONAL
Constance Baker Motley (1921–2005) was the chief legal strategist behind the desegregation of American education. As the first Black woman to argue before the Supreme Court and the first Black woman to serve as a federal judge, Motley spent her career dismantling the legal architecture of segregation.
Working with the NAACP Legal Defense Fund, Motley wrote the initial complaint in Brown v. Board of Education, the landmark case that declared school segregation unconstitutional. She argued ten cases before the Supreme Court and won nine. She personally represented James Meredith when he integrated the University of Mississippi and the students who integrated universities across the South.
Motley understood that law could be a tool for liberation. Every brief she wrote, every argument she made, every case she won chipped away at the legal foundation of white supremacy. Her work required not only brilliance but courage—she faced death threats and violence for challenging the established order.
In 1966, President Lyndon Johnson appointed her to the federal bench, where she served for nearly forty years. She brought to the bench the same commitment to justice that had defined her advocacy career.
Motley's legacy reminds us that change often happens through persistent, unglamorous work. The civil rights movement had its dramatic marches and speeches, but it also had its legal briefs and courtroom arguments. Both were essential.
Her example inspires anyone working within systems to change those systems. Whether you are a Latino attorney challenging discriminatory policies, an Asian American judge ensuring fairness, or a paralegal of any background preparing cases that will affect thousands, you are continuing Motley's work.
REFLECTION QUESTION
How might you use your skills and knowledge to work within systems for justice? What 'impossible' change might be possible within a decade if you persist?
CLOSING PRAYER
God of justice who makes the impossible possible, we thank You for Constance Baker Motley, who dismantled segregation one legal argument at a time. Give us her strategic wisdom, her tireless work ethic, and her long-term vision. Help us see that lasting change often requires persistent, unglamorous effort. May we never give up on what seems impossible today. Amen.
