DAY 15

Dr. Charles Drew

The Blood That Saves

SCRIPTURE

John 15:13 — "Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one's life for one's friends."

"Excellence of performance will transcend artificial barriers created by man." — Dr. Charles Drew

DEVOTIONAL

Dr. Charles Richard Drew (1904–1950) developed techniques for storing blood plasma that saved countless lives during World War II and beyond. His research on blood banks revolutionized transfusion medicine and created systems still used today to preserve and distribute blood supplies.

Drew's brilliance was matched by bitter irony. While he directed the first American Red Cross Blood Bank and helped establish blood collection programs for the U.S. military, segregation policies prohibited mixing blood from Black and White donors—a policy with no scientific basis whatsoever. Drew resigned his position in protest against this racist practice.

He returned to Howard University, where he trained a generation of Black surgeons and continued his research. In 1950, Dr. Drew died from injuries sustained in a car accident while traveling to a medical conference. A persistent myth claimed he died because a White hospital refused to treat him—this story, though untrue, reflects the real horror of segregated healthcare that killed many others.

Drew's life demonstrates that excellence can transcend prejudice while also confronting its costs. His blood preservation techniques saved lives regardless of the donor's race—blood is blood. Yet the systems around his work remained cruelly divided.

His legacy speaks to medical professionals of all backgrounds. Latino nurses caring for patients in underserved communities, Asian American doctors researching diseases that affect all populations, healthcare workers of every background committed to treating every patient with dignity—all are heirs to Drew's vision of medicine in service to humanity.

Our blood, regardless of color, is fundamentally the same. Our humanity, regardless of background, reflects the same divine image.

REFLECTION QUESTION

How does your work serve people regardless of their background? What artificial barriers might excellence help you transcend?

CLOSING PRAYER

God who created all humanity with common blood and shared dignity, we thank You for Dr. Charles Drew, whose genius saved countless lives. Help us see past the artificial divisions that prejudice creates. Give us excellence in our work that serves all people. May we never forget that what unites us is greater than what divides us. Use our hands for healing and our minds for discoveries that bless every community. Amen.
