Echoes of Excellence: Paul Robeson

Paul Robeson

The Voice That Would Not Be Silenced

SCRIPTURE

Isaiah 6:8 — "Then I heard the voice of the Lord saying, 'Whom shall I send? And who will go for us?' And I said, 'Here am I. Send me!'"

"The artist must take sides. He must elect to fight for freedom or slavery. I have made my choice. I had no alternative." — Paul Robeson

DEVOTIONAL

Paul Leroy Robeson (1898–1976) possessed one of the most magnificent voices of the twentieth century. A scholar, athlete, actor, singer, and activist, Robeson excelled in everything he attempted. He was valedictorian of his class at Rutgers, an All-American football player, and a Columbia Law School graduate. His bass-baritone voice moved audiences around the world.

But Robeson's greatest excellence was his moral courage. He used his fame not to accumulate wealth but to advocate for the oppressed everywhere. He spoke against lynching, colonialism, and fascism. He performed for workers and activists. He refused to be silent about injustice even when silence would have preserved his career.

His outspokenness cost him dearly. During the McCarthy era, the U.S. government revoked his passport, effectively imprisoning him within American borders. His concerts were canceled. His records were removed from stores. The country tried to silence the voice it could not control.

Yet Robeson persisted. Even when performing publicly was impossible, he gave concerts over the telephone to audiences overseas. When the world tried to forget him, he refused to forget the causes he championed.

Robeson's example resonates across generations and cultures. Latino artists using their platforms for immigrant rights walk in his footsteps. Asian American performers speaking against hate crimes carry his spirit. Any artist who refuses to separate their craft from their conscience is a heir to Robeson's legacy.

God gives us gifts not primarily for our own enjoyment but for the service of others. The voice, the talent, the platform—these are all means to answer God's call: "Here am I. Send me."

REFLECTION QUESTION

What gifts has God given you, and how are you using them to serve the cause of justice? What might it cost you to speak truth through your craft?

CLOSING PRAYER

God of the powerful voice and the humble servant, we thank You for Paul Robeson, who refused to separate his art from his activism. Grant us courage to use our gifts for Your purposes, even when the world threatens to silence us. Help us remember that our talents are trusts, not possessions. May we always be ready to answer Your call with "Here am I. Send me." Amen.
